Norman Gunston Interview Aug-Sept 1975 in L.A.

NG: I’m sitting here talking to muso colleague Frank Zappa, a legend in his own lifetime and leader of the rock religious group, The Mothers of Invention. Mr. Zappa, how are you?

FZ: Right on, brother.

NG: Oh yes, and funky, that’s not a schtick, schmuck. Are the boys allowed to marry?

FZ: Yes.

NG: They are? Oh, that’s a very progressive sect.

FZ: Animals.

NG: Animals, eh? There allowed to marry animals?

FZ: Yes.

NG: Oh, How adult, how sophisticated! You went to Tasmania then, did you?

FZ: No, we didn’t go to Tasmania.

NG: You didn’t?

FZ: We had the opportunity but we turned it down.

NG: Did you? I’m thinking of playing Tasmania myself, doing a concert down there, what do you think of that?

FZ: I think it’s probably one of the greatest ideas you’ve had during this program.

NG: Yeah, yeah, it’s good to have another string to your knot, isn’t it? I actually already have one other string to my knot. (Pulls out his harmonica) Have you got a harmonica player in the band

FZ: Hey, not right now, no.

NG: You haven’t? Oh well, I...I mean I’m available. I don’t know...I used to play harmonica...

FZ: Are you really available? I mean, when we come down there will you jam with us or...

NG::(Excited) It’d be, you know...(pulls back) If I’ve got the time or something I will. I’m available here now, but when you come to Australia who knows, I’m a pretty big personality, you know.

FZ: That’s right, yeah.

NG: Ah, but the only thing is you might have to tone the music down a bit ‘cos I used to play electric harmonica but it gave my lips static. They picked up a lot of lint and I stopped. I only play acoustic harmonica now. Have you got a singer in the band, or have all the boys taken the vow of silence?

FZ: There’s quite a few singers in the band.

NG: Oh, I see.

FZ: There’s seven.

NG: They’re all good are they?

FZ: They’re all mediocre.

NG: Yeah, yeah, that’s why I think it’s...(points to his harmonica). Well you know, if you’d like to have a bit of a jam now. Oh, you don’t call it that over here, you call it a jelly.

FZ: What ever you like. How about the blues, you want to play the blues?

NG: You know Liza with a Z? You don’t? Well, whatever you think you know.

FZ: How about folk rock? You’re in what key?

NG: Folk rock? I love it, i love it. I love progressive music, Peter, Paul and Mary. It’s in E.

FZ: We’re not in tune but...

NG: (Looks at the camera) No, well he’s out of tune.

FZ: Take it away. (Norman starts to play the ABC TV Theme music then into a blues shuffle)

FZ: You’re no Bob Dylan.

NG: No, but that was a good bit, had a sort of rhythm to it, sounded very good, sounded very good Mr. Zappa. Well thank you very much, Mr. Zappa. It was extremely interesting. The boy’s got a promising career and when he comes down to Australia give him a break. Mr. Zappa

The musical reference that Norman Gunston uses to close his performance is 'Majestic Fanfare' written in 1935 by the British composer Charles Williams (1893 - 1978). Charles Williams is perhaps better remembered for his 'Dream of Owen', but 20th century Australians knew 'Majestic Fanfare' as the theme music for radio and television news programs on the government funded Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC, formerly the Australian Broadcasting Commission).
The ABC 're-orchestrated' (ie paid big money to Richard Mills to do a Muzak-type sampling job) its news theme in 2000. (thanks vmq6695 Zappateers)
